London – Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute graduate, Ms. Tahirih Naylor-Thimm, will receive the Brescia College Young Alumni Award of Merit, this Sunday, October 5, at the Brescia College Homecoming Lunch. Ms. Naylor is being honoured for her many accomplishments, one of which is her work as a Baha’i International Community Representative to the United Nations Office in New York, USA. Tahirih leads the strategic planning and implementation of work on the issues of human rights, social development and sustainability. She serves as the chair of the Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) Committee on Social Development which is a coalition of NGOs working to eradicate world poverty.
Ms. Naylor-Thimm graduated with honours from the Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute in 1996. She graduated from Brescia College in 2000 and was chosen Valedictorian. Ms. Naylor-Thimm completed her law degree in International, Comparative and Transnational law at Osgoode Hall in 2003.
Naylor explained, “The schools I attended helped me to cultivate my values. As a Baha’i, I believe that learning that begins in words and ends in words does not amount to much. We need to acquire and apply knowledge in a way that makes the world a better place. My career at the United Nations allows me to fulfill the potential of my education because I get to put my values and what I’ve learned into action.”
Cora McNamara, Principal of Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute recalls, “Tahirih was a role model to every one at the school, students and staff. Her loving interactions and competent plans for the betterment of humanity inspired all of us.”
The newly established Young Alumni award will become an annual event celebrating the achievements of young alumna. The award winner is a Brescia graduate who has shown leadership in her career and who embodies Brescia’s values of wisdom, justice and compassion.
